Kaylin Smith, Junior VHS

It’s not often a head coach uses the word “elite” when describing the skills of one of his players. But Venice softball coach Steve Constantino believes Smith is exactly that, at least when she has a glove on her hand. “An elite talent at second base,” he said. “Possibly the best I have ever seen.” Last season Smith made just two errors in 79 chances, a fielding percentage of .975, while turning two double plays. But she’s just as good with a bat in her hand. Smith led Venice with a .360 average, with 2 doubles and 12 RBI. “A perfectionist, gritty, aggressive and a fabulous teammate,” Constantino said. “Elite speed on the bases with a powerful bat. Should lead the team in doubles and runs this year batting leadoff.”
